Shakti Dance Movement is a Tribal Fusion Belly Dance company in Honolulu, Hawaii. An all women’s dance collective, Shakti Dance Movement is proud to bring women together for classes, workshops, and great events. Shakti Dance Movement's founder, Kalae Kaina, has been belly dancing for 13 years and began teaching in 2004. The group has gone through many changes over the years and has grown into a very motivated group of women who wish to share their love of dance with others. Shakti has been performing at night clubs, cultural events, fundraisers, and private parties in Honolulu and abroad since 2004. Their all original choreography, cutting edge performances, and exquisite technique have gained them notable recognition in the dance community.
Shakti Dance Movement has been honored to work with great local artists such as Tau Dance Theater, Giinko Marrichino & Coco Chandelier, Cherry Blossom Cabaret, Middle Eastern Dance Artists of Hawaii and many more. They have been fortunate to perform at Tribal Fest in Sebastopol, California in 2007 and 2008, and Leeward Community College for their annual Modern Dance Festival (2008 & 2009). Shakti has shared the stage with many great DJ’s including Lorin Bassnectar, Cheb I Sabbah, Amar, and Wazulu the I’ll Dravidian. Shakti Dance Movement along with their sister company Origins Dance Collective have been sponsoring events and workshops in their hometown of Honolulu since 2006. They have sponsored BellyDance Superstar Kami Liddle in 2006 & 2008, belly dance extraordinaire Zoe Jakes in 2007& 2008, and the beautiful Sabrina Fox in January 2008 and September 2008. Along with workshops Shakti has promoted annual fundraisers for their company at NextDoor (2007), and at Wine the Experience (2006, 2007). *Photo by John Powers |
